HEALTH-VIETNAM: Choosing Illegal Duck Breeding to Penury

Ngo Thi Thu Phuong – Newsmekong*

TAY NINH, Vietnam, Feb 12 2007 (IPS) – On a rough, earthen road flanked by green rice paddies, Phan Anh Tam throws unhusked rice, mixed with mash and dried fish, to thousands of white ducks waddling around his thin legs.
For 15 years now, Tam has been raising ducks in the Ben Cau district of the south-western Vietnamese province of Tay Ninh, near the Cambodian border. But these days he is worried by a temporary ban of duck-raising to contain the spread of avian influenza.

If I m not allowed to raise ducks (in Vietnam) anymore, I must keep going on, but in Cambodia, Tam says, making himself heard above the quacking.

Tam prefers Cambodia, should the government crack down on his business, because it is near his hometown and because the adjacent country has more lax laws on breeding ducks.

The Vietnamese government s temporary ban on duck breeding was based on the belief that waterfowl are less resistant to infection c…

THAILAND: New Probe into ‘Drug War’ Killings Takes a Stab at Impunity

    Marwaan Macan-Markar

BANGKOK, May 27 2009 (IPS) – A special investigative arm of Thailand s criminal justice system is set to mount a fresh probe into a massacre of civilians during a brutal war on drugs launched six years ago, when the authoritarian Thaksin Shinawatra was the country s prime minister.
Kalasin, a province in the rural northeast, will feature in this fresh probe by the department of special investigations (DSI). Kalasin s existing policy of x- raying every community to keep it narcotics free had inspired the Thaksin administration to mount its nation-wide war on drugs, beginning in early 2003.

The neighbouring province of Roi Et, which, like Kalasin, is home to this Southeast Asian nation s poor, farming communities, is also due to come under scrutiny. The northwestern province of Tak, close to the Thai-Burma border, may also face fresh probes, says a source familiar with these investigations.

It has taken more than five years for the DSI …

    Thalif Deen

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 7 2011 (IPS) – The United Nations is intensifying its global campaign to eliminate one of the most widely-condemned religious and cultural rituals in the world today, mostly in Africa and Asia: female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C).
The joint efforts by two U.N. agencies the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) and the U.N. children s agency UNICEF have resulted in over 6,000 communities abandoning the physically-harmful practice in countries such as Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Senegal, Burkina Faso, the Gambia, Guinea and Somalia.

Asked if FGM/C is prevalent mostly in Africa or in Asia, and whether it is confined primarily to Muslim communities, Dr. Nafissatou J. Diop, coordinator of the Joint UNFPA-UNICEF Programme on FGM/C, told IPS the practice takes place mainly in 28 African and West Asian countries.

But it also exists in a number of Asian countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Kurdistan, and also among migrant communitie…

Former “Blood Diamonds” now Provide Employment. Credit: Tommy Trenchard/ IPS

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 27 2018 (IPS) – How many people know where their gold and diamond jewelry comes from?

How many people consider the human cost of its production?

Not many consumers ask these questions, and, shockingly, neither do many of the world’s leading jewelry brands.

It’s a trend that Human Rights Watch (HRW) is trying to change with a new social media campaign, #BehindTheBling.

“We want people to think about where their jewelry comes from,” Jo Becker, Advocacy Director of the Children’s Rights Division at HRW, told IPS.

“Importantly, we want people to tell the brands that. We want them to write, to tweet, to call the big companies to put pressure on them to guarantee that their gold and diamonds are not coming from places that are c…
